Captura joins the Long Duration Energy Storage Council
Expanding the applications of our electrodialysis technology
Renewable energy generation is growing, but ensuring that power is always available when it’s needed remains a major challenge. Greater flexibility can bridge that gap: storing renewable electricity when it’s abundant and delivering it when demand rises or generation falls. Long-duration energy storage (LDES) provides this flexibility by storing energy from hours to multiple days, helping renewable power meet demand around the clock. As data centers expand, industrial electricity demand rises and energy security remains critical, LDES can help build a more reliable, affordable energy system with less reliance on fossil fuels.
To help advance this opportunity, Captura has joined the Long Duration Energy Storage Council. The Council brings together technology providers, energy companies, utilities, investors, and large energy users from around the world to help bring LDES technologies to market through policy engagement and commercial partnerships.
Our membership marks another step in Captura’s diversification. We now manufacture our bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) technology for a range of sectors alongside carbon removal, building on our experience in direct ocean capture. LDES is emerging as a particularly promising application, and we’re excited to learn from fellow Council members and share our expertise as we advance our energy storage solution.
A simple and rapidly expandible LDES method
Captura’s LDES solution uses BMED technology to store electricity as chemical energy. During charging, the BMED system uses electricity to rapidly convert a salt solution into separate acid and base solutions, which are safely stored in tanks. During discharge, recombining those solutions through the BMED system releases the stored energy as electricity.
The core system is simple: BMED and storage tanks. Energy capacity can be increased simply by expanding the number of tanks, creating a flexible approach to long-duration storage with the potential for rapid, low-cost expansion.
Common materials, lower-cost storage
Captura’s approach to LDES starts with abundant, inexpensive storage media: salt and water. Paired with our high-performance BMED technology, these common materials help keep multi-day storage costs low. We also manufacture the BMED technology ourselves, giving us control over cost and performance while helping maintain a dependable supply as we grow.
Beyond the cost benefits, the system’s aqueous, non-flammable chemistry is inherently safe and has no thermal runaway risk. Its electrode-less architecture also avoids reliance on critical minerals, reducing exposure to material shortages and price swings.
From ocean capture to energy storage
At the core of Captura’s LDES solution is the BMED technology we have already developed, built, operated, and validated for direct ocean capture. We’re bringing that proven platform and our experience in system design, development, operation, and manufacturing to this promising new application.
We have demonstrated our LDES solution in the lab and are now working toward a pilot-scale demonstration. This next step will let us test the complete energy storage system at a larger scale and learn what it takes to move toward commercial deployment.

Working together to advance LDES
Joining the LDES Council gives us the opportunity to learn from fellow members, share our electrochemical expertise, and build key partnerships as we move toward pilot demonstration and commercial deployment. We also look forward to supporting the Council’s work to develop markets and policies that help LDES technologies reach wider use.
Together, these efforts will help us utilize Captura’s proven BMED platform to bring flexible, affordable multi-day energy storage to market.
